Webflow vs. WordPress, our experiences

Curious about our experiences with Webflow vs. WordPress? There is no right or wrong, every case is different.

Curious about our Webflow vs WordPress experience?

Years ago we built our first website. When it comes to CMS systems and tools, we have been through plenty. Where we once started with Macaw and Adobe Muse, we soon switched to WordPress.

Did someone say WordPress?

WordPress, known to many and loved for its flexibility. Plugins and themes can be used by the hobbyist, but die-hard agencies can also work with it to deploy their custom themes for clients. WordPress is a simple tool for some, and can feel like an endless maze to others. Because there are endless options such as themes, plugins and page builders, you are never really done discovering new features.

Pros of WordPress?

  • Large range of plugins and themes
  • Custom code and bespoke work possible
  • The WordPress CMS itself is free to use

Cons of WordPress?

  • Plugin and theme oriented
  • Not the fastest kid in class if you use too many plugins.
  • Without CSS knowledge, customising a theme is not 'always' possible.
A website with a wobbly tower of plugins on every side; two have come loose.

Meet Webflow

The no-code tool for designers and agencies. Where WordPress works with themes and plugins, Webflow absolutely does not. Yes okay, you can certainly buy themes, but updates, there are none in Webflow, or rather your website is always up to date. Unlike WordPress, Webflow is not free, and you are obliged to use a paid plan. As for hosting, you can go many ways, provided you have a paid account plan. Then you can export all the code of the website and run it on the CMS of your choice, WordPress included. What makes us love Webflow is the freedom. The freedom, as designers, to turn our Figma design files into finished products in the form of websites for our clients. Blazingly fast and fairly innovative when it comes to no-code. That does not mean you can't add custom code, because there are certainly possibilities there as well.

Why do we choose Webflow?

  • Complete freedom when it comes to design.
  • Speed and performance
  • Relatively low maintenance
A clean canvas without add-ons on which blocks are placed freely in a custom layout.

Cons of Webflow?

  • E-commerce features for Dutch users: it is possible, but with strings attached. Several third-party providers can help you out here.
  • Cost, it is not the cheapest.
In short, for every use case you can decide for yourself which route to take. What matters most to us is that the client is always helped in the right way. Whether that is with a bespoke WordPress website or a bespoke Webflow one.
